Our Community
justice

Students are learning about various communities, and what makes a community.  They are studying wants vs. needs, as well as goods and services.  Our communities offer various goods and services to meet our wants and needs.  The home project encourages families to explore and document what goods and services are offered in their community.  Students then present their project to the class. Biography Project

Revised May 6, 2009 (Clarification of deliverables, Ms. Brzinski)

The first graders are learning about the lives of a number of Americans who lived during the last 200 years. By studying biographies of a variety of people, we learn how people follow their passions, show perseverance, and work hard to achieve goals.

As a part of this unit, each child will choose a person to learn about; after researching the life of this person, he or she will present a short oral biography report to the class.

The Biography Projects are due Monday, February 22. Read on for more information, including success criteria, and a downloadable handout.

Geography and Mapping

People want and need to know where they are. People describe where they are in relation to other people, places, objects, landmarks, and directions. They also use this information to travel from place to place.

Check this page for the unit overview, including recommended resources—web sites and books—for parents and students.

First Grade Map Project

First graders are learning about maps and globes. They have learned how to read and interpret maps using map symbols, map keys, and a compass rose. For this unit, students are required to make a map of their bedroom. Read on for project requirements and due dates.
