Second graders are given a homework checklist . This checklist is a way for parents and teachers to help students become more responsible for their homework. Students should be doing some type of homework each day. This checklist is provided as a reference to parents. It will be laminated and placed in each student's homework folder.
Homework Reading: 2nd graders are expected to read out loud each day for about 20 minutes. The purpose of oral reading is to increase the student's fluency. We ask that the students read to a family member or care-giver each day. This is a great opportunity to talk to the students about what they are reading. Ask them questions about what they've read, what they think about the story and how they might change the story. Please indicate on the homework reading sheet what book, books or pages your child has read each day.
Math Homework: Math homework, either problem solving or a home-link will be given each day that we have math class. At the beginning of the year, we will be teaching different problem solving strategies. You will see the example we did in class and can use that to help your child solve the homework problem. We ask that you assist your child in writing the explanations in complete sentences. Explaining our math thinking can be difficult at first, so please stick with it.
Current Events: We expect that each month every child brings in a current event article from either a newspaper, magazine or off the TV/Radio news. A special current event form will be sent home at the beginning of each month and we expect it to be completed before the end of the month. We ask that you help your child find an age-appropriate, non-violent article to share and that you help them practice their oral presentations. Students should be prepared to answer questions about their articles.
There may also be times when your child has to bring home work that was not completed during class time. This work is high priority work. If we have to send home a classroom assignment, we expect it back the next day, unless we indicate differently. Tuesdays will be our "catch-up" day. Children who have not turned in homework will be staying in from recess to work during our Tuesday study hall.
